Air Filters For House Reviews

Choosing The Right Air Filters For House Use

Having an efficient central air conditioner is one thing, but if the filter inside doesn’t screen out the impurities in the air, you could be needlessly suffering from a variety of illnesses and allergies. Choosing air filters for house use is just as vital as choosing an appliance or even furniture.

Some air filters can be removed every few months and washed down. Although this might seem economical and even rather effective, if this is the method you use, check the filter again before putting it back into the a/c unit. Do you see any discoloration, wear or tear? Of course you do! It means the filter is not as clean and pristine as it should be. Washing, vacuuming and bleaching certainly help a bit, but if you suffer from allergies, breathing problems of any type, or generally concerned about your health, replaceable filters are a necessity.

These are easily found in your local hardware store and larger home improvement centers. They are clearly marked with verbiage that indicates they are made to reduce the allergens in your home by trapping them in the filter, along with the usual dust particles, animal dander, mold, mildew and any other impurity you shouldn’t be inhaling.

In homes where occupants do suffer from severe allergies and breathing problems, look for filters marked at 9 – 10 on a quality scale. At this level they are certified to remove pollutants and allergens of 1 to 2 microns in diameter, meaning they won’t fit through the microscopic holes in the filter itself. If the home continues to provide a high level of these substances, more frequent replacement is recommended. In other words, if are trying to remove pollen and your back yard is full of trees in bloom, you should check the filter on a weekly basis. When you see a dense enough covering that actually turns the filter a different color, it’s time to replace it.

When you find one you like, buy a few at a time. You don’t want to be in a position where you desperately need a new filter but your local supplier is out of stock. If at all possible, buy them by the case. Seasonal changes can easily force you to go through more than you could have planned for.

Also be aware that different manufacturers will have filters of different sizes, but they most probably will fit your unit just fine. A size that is up to an inch small all around will have virtually no impact on performance.
